Names flood in for top citizen award

With the deadline for applications coming up tomorrow (Oct. 30), quite a few names have been submitted so far for the town’s 22nd “Citizen of the Year” award.
“We have at least a dozen applications, and there’s been lot of interest from people. It’s really picked up in the last day or so,” noted deputy clerk Kathy Lawson.

“[The selection committee] should have a lot to choose from,” she added.
Nomination forms still can be picked up at the information desk at the Civic Centre.
Completed forms must be returned there by 4 p.m. tomorrow.
Anyone who has taken on charitable fundraising, organized community events, or just lent a helping hand is eligible to receive the award if they are nominated by a fellow resident.
The only stipulation is that the recipient be a resident of the Town of Fort Frances, and not presently hold elected office.
The selection committee—consisting of Bill Gushulak (“Citizen of the Year 2000”), Mark Kowalchuk (“Citizen of the Year 1994”), Mayor Roy Avis, and deputy mayor Sharon Tibbs—is encouraging as many people as possible to nominate individuals so they have plenty of candidates to choose from.
The committee then will meet in order to make a recommendation to council prior to the town’s annual appreciation banquet on Nov. 20, at which time the “Citizen of the Year” will be formally honoured.
For more information, call Gushulak (274-3891) or Kowalchuk (274-9118).
