Rare painting by Tom Thomson to go on sale in Calgary this month

A rare painting by one of Canada’s most venerated artists is set to go on sale.
After being held by a private family for 94 years, the Tom Thomson painting will be offered this month for the first time at a public auction in Alberta, the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday.

Doug Levis, of Levis Fine Art Auctions & Appraisals, told the newspaper a relative of the owner received the oil painting, Untitled - Dawn on Round Lake, from Thomson in 1915. For whatever reason, the Alberta woman decided it was time to sell it.
“We’re quite pleased to be offering it,” Levis told the paper. The auction will be held in Calgary on April 19.
The piece was painted when Thomson went on a hunting trip.
Thomson’s sketches have been hot commodities, and last spring, Heffel Fine Art, Sotheby’s Canada and Joyner Waddington’s each sold a Thomson painting for more than $1 million. But in November, one of the artist’s works elicited low bids and was declared unsold.
