Rickford defends 'pause'

Earlier this month, the Ontario government announced the curriculum modernization summer writing sessions were being cancelled.

The modernization process was aimed at including First Nation, Métis, and Inuit partners while developing the new curriculum, which was one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

Manitou shaking off funk

The tide is starting to turn for Manitou Forest Products in the Borderland Soccer League.

After snapping a six-game losing streak last Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Centra Pipelines, they battled top-ranked CJ Contracting to a 1-1 tie in men's division action Monday night.

Jeremy Nussbaumer netted Manitou's (4-6-2) lone goal while Jacob Albright was solid between the pipes.

Mann paces Braves to rout

No matter the opponent, the Fort Frances Braves only know one thing: winning.

Brett Mann crushed a three-run homer in the third inning to pace the top-ranked Braves to a 13-2 drubbing of fourth-seeded Windey's Warriors last Thursday evening at VanJura in the second round of the six-team, double-elimination Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs.

New champs crowned at FFCBC

A pair of faces were all smiles Saturday afternoon at the 24th-annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship.

Bryan Gustafson and Brian McNanney produced a three-day haul of 51.57 pounds to claim their first-ever FFCBC title in front of a joyous crowd under the big tent at the Sorting Gap Marina.

With the nomination deadline coming up next Friday (July 27), more district individuals have filed their papers to run in the Oct. 22 municipal election.

In Fort Frances, newcomer Clinton D. C. Gray is the newest candidate running for one of six seats on town council. Gray filed his nomination last Thursday afternoon.

Strachan victorious again

Playing second fiddle wasn't an appealing option for Brody Strachan on Saturday night.

The Emo native battled it out with Devlin's Jamie Davis and claimed the checkered flag in the WISSOTA Modifieds division in Borderland Racing Association action at the Emo Speedway.

It was the third feature win of the season for Strachan, who now sits atop the points standings with 519.

Tebinaak split pair of make-up games

The Sabaskong Tebinaak managed to earn a split in a pair of make-up games in Rainy River District Women's Fastball League action on Monday night.

Candi Jelly earned the pitching victory as the Tebinaak (2-10-1) topped the Dawson Tigers 12-11 in a make-up game for the one that was postponed on July 2.

Cass Teeple suffered the loss for Dawson (5-9).
