Duo tops again at 'Bassin For Bucks'

Another fishing tournament culminated in yet another win for Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson.

After claiming a second-straight International Falls Bass Championship title alongside Scott Dingwall last month, Gustafson of Keewatin teamed up with Kenora's Mike Reid to nab the crown at the 23rd-annual “Bassin For Bucks” in Sioux Narrows over the weekend.

Tennis tournament makes return here

For more than a decade, Fort Frances has been without a tennis tournament.

That all changed Saturday when 16 players met at the courts to square off.

Taking first place in doubles action were John Libler and his partner, Craig Mahoney, of Sioux Lookout, who beat out runners-up Anthony Andrusco of Fort Frances and Humberto Pachekoi of Dryden.

Drum roll, please . . .

Catilin Hartlen, morning show host for 93.1 The Border, drew the winning ticket for the Kiwanis Club's “Trip of the Month” draw for September this morning at International Travel Services as Kiwanian Robin Wright looked on. Pam and Terry Munn of Fort Frances won a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica valued at $4,200. Next month's trip is to New York City ($3,600).

Fire ban lifted in area

Just in time for the Labour Day long weekend, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has lifted the Restricted Fire Zone that had been in place in parts of the Northwest Region.

The municipal fire bans for the Town of Fort Frances, as well as the townships of Alberton, La Vallee, Emo, and Chapple, also have been lifted.

Stock car season finale washed out

Mother Nature decided to put the finishing touches on the Borderland Racing Association season a little earlier than most racers would have liked.

A thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon forced the cancellation of the annual “Fan Appreciation Night” races in what would have been the final chance for racers to accrue points this season at the Emo Speedway.
