Shooting Stars nab tourney title

The local Shooting Stars Bantam girls' hockey team went undefeated at the inaugural Westy's 3-on-3 tournament over the weekend in Dryden.

Competing in the combined Bantam/Midget division, the squad compiled a 4-0 record to finish in top spot.

The first game saw the Shooting Stars cruise to a 9-2 romp over the Brett's girls' Midget team.

Star Muskie running back Sekina Scheibler still is reaping the benefits of an impressive season.

The WHSFL recently named him to the Team Steeves roster (Vincent Massey Brandon) for the league's Senior Bowl, which is slated for May 26 at 2 p.m. at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

Fans can get tickets to the game from the players or for $6 at the gate.

Gold, silver medals for Northern Storm

The Northern Storm 14U regional girls' hockey team went 2-1-1 en route to the championship at the “Battle by the Bay” tournament in Duluth, Mn. over the weekend.

Facing Machine Orange in Sunday's final, the Storm used a pair of second-period goals to eke out a 2-1 victory.

Autumn Cooper bulged the twine while the other Storm goal scorer was not identified.

Solemn salute

In solidarity with communities across Canada, the flags outside the Civic Centre have been at half-mast in honour of the 16 lives lost as a result of the horrific crash involving the Humboldt Broncos' hockey team bus on April 6 near Tisdale, Sask.

SIJHL names all-star teams

The SIJHL last week announced its first and second all-star teams for the 2017-18 season.

Hailey Clendenning was the lone Fort Frances Lakers' representative after she was selected to the second all-star team as a trainer/equipment manager.

Clendenning earned honours for her significant contributions in her first season with the Lakers.

Mixed title for Bonot

Trevor Bonot capped an excellent season by going undefeated en route to the title at the BrokerLink mixed provincial playdowns over the weekend in Nipigon.

The Stratton native, who joined forces with his sister, Jackie McCormick, as well as Mike McCarville and Angela Lee-Wiwcharyk for the tournament, opened play Thursday night with a 6-2 win over Nathan Lohnes (Fort William).
