Award of Excellence

Kimberly Jacobson, left, received the Campus Award of Excellence from Judi Maundrell, senior vice-president, Academic, for Confederation College at the convocation ceremony for the local campus Monday night. Jacobson, who graduated from the paramedic program, also received an Academic Award of Excellence, the President’s Award of Excellence, and the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

‘Aaaargh’

Six-year-old students Hailey Joyce, left, and Grace George showed off their pirate muscles while they practised their adding at St. Michael’s School this morning. “Pirate Day” saw many students come to school wearing eye patches and bandanas, with some going all-out by bringing along blow-up parrots and foam swords to complement their costumes.

College grad

Patricia Anderson received her Educational Assistant diploma yesterday evening from Confederation College president Dr. Jim Madder. The annual convocation ceremony for the local campus saw 27 graduates cross the stage at the Townshend Theatre here.

Lake fun

Seven-year-old Kayla Boshkaykin, left, and her friend, Sasha Kabatay, five, couldn’t stop laughing as they sprayed each other with noodle water guns at Pither’s Point Park on Saturday afternoon.

‘Block Party’

One-year-old Sophia Tanguay was quite happy to play with toy trains at the “Block Party” yesterday evening on the parking lot at Fort Frances High School. Families with young children were invited to come out and learn about the importance of play at 22 different play centres.

School BBQ

Grade 1 students Jerzi Calder and Tayler Chown enjoyed hotdogs and chips at a family barbecue at J.W. Walker School yesterday evening. The annual event saw many families come out to visit, play, and enjoy the warm weather.

‘Camp Day’

Jillian Gustafson, bottom, a Grade 11 student at Fort High, took the afternoon off school to volunteer for “Camp Day” at Tim Hortons here, where she also works. She was helped by young teen Kiersten Redsky, who will be going to camp thanks to the money raised through the car wash and silent auction held yesterday and the “rent-a-tent (or cabin)” fundraiser from the past week.

Medieval ‘battle’

Members of “Guardians of the Fort” played “Belegarth Medieval Combat,” a physical game in which players fight medieval style with foam-padded weapons, at the Legion Park here yesterday evening. The group—now in its second year—practices each Wednesday and Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
