Fire risk up

Two new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by late yesterday afternoon.

Both blazes, which occurred in Red Lake District, were listed as “not under control” at 0.1 hectares and 0.3 ha, respectively.

There are no other active fires in the region.

Winnipeg anglers pay price for fishing offences

Two Winnipeg residents have been fined a total of $1,700 for fishing offences.

Brent Kruger and Cynthia Nault each were fined $750 for having an over-limit of walleye, as well as $100 for packaging fish in such a way that they could not be easily counted.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case Dec. 6 in Kenora but only assessed the penalty on May 2.

Moose hunt costly

Seven Ontario men have been fined a total of $19,250 for moose hunting offences.

Michael Glofcheskie of Barry's Bay pleaded guilty and was fined $3,000 for hunting moose without a licence, $1,500 for attaching a calf game seal to a cow moose, $1,000 for possessing illegally-killed wildlife, and $1,000 for making a false statement to a conservation officer.
