Fire scene stays hot

Nine new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday evening, including two in Sioux Lookout District, three in Red Lake District, and two in Nipigon District.

Meanwhile, a total of 76 active fires are burning in the region, affecting 114,877 hectares.

Most anglers obeying rules

Most anglers checked by Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers on Lake of the Woods in Kenora District were obeying Ontario’s fishing regulations.

Conservation officers conducted the enforcement blitz from June 23-25, checking for compliance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the Ontario Fishery Regulations.

Fire evacuees heading home

Residents of Mishkeegogamang First Nation are scheduled to return to their community tomorrow (July 1).

The decision was recommended by the Ministry of Natural Resources based on ongoing fire suppression efforts and the weather forecast.

Changes in wind direction and weather, however, could lead to smoke returning to the community.

A Ministry of Natural Resources enforcement blitz on June 11 in Fort Frances District resulted in a 95 percent compliance rate, with only 19 charges laid and 18

warnings issued to anglers.

MNR conservation officers, including the canine services unit, checked 788 people on Highway 11 at Couchiching First Nation.

Most of those checked were non-residents.

Moose hunter fined

A U.S. resident has been fined $2,500 for illegally-hunting moose at a remote lodge in Northern Ontario.

Allen Fenwick of Willisburg, Ky., pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting moose without a licence.

His firearm was seized and will be returned upon payment of the fine.

But six fires, most caused by lightning, still remain active in the region, including one in Quetico Park here in Fort Frances District.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the region is calling for a drying trend over the next several days.
