'Flu-like symptoms leave infant dead, 14 ill

MORLEY, Alta.—RCMP and paramedics were called to a rural home west of Calgary yesterday where an infant was pronounced dead and 14 other people were found suffering from influenza-like symptoms.

Cpl. Curtis Peters said Mounties went to a home in Morley, on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation 60 km west of Calgary, to check on a report of a child in medical distress.

Feds to boost opioid treatment options

CALGARY—Ottawa is planning to boost treatment options for opioid drug users as it tries to deal with what Health minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor is calling a national public health crisis.

Petitpas Taylor yesterday outlined some of the steps the federal government aims to take at a conference of the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction.

New germ-free lab opens doors

CALGARY—There's no such thing as an easy coffee run or a quick bathroom break for the dozen or so staffers at a new laboratory opening in Calgary today.

That's because anyone and anything entering the facility—part of the Western Canadian Microbiome Centre at the University of Calgary—must be thoroughly cleansed of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microscopic critters.
