Missing, murdered women toll ‘way bigger’: Bennett

OTTAWA—The number of missing and murdered indigenous women across the country is “way bigger” than 1,200, Indigenous Affairs minister Carolyn Bennett said yesterday.

Her comments came as the government marked the end of a consultation process with the families of victims as it prepares to establish a public inquiry into these losses.

Right-to-die law deadline extended

OTTAWA—The Supreme Court has added four months to the federal government’s deadline for producing a new law on doctor-assisted death—but with an exemption for anyone who wants to ask a judge to end their life earlier.

The Liberal government had argued it needed the original Feb. 6 deadline extended by six months in order to have the time to craft a proper law.

Liberals try to ditch ‘nanny-gate’

OTTAWA—The Liberals are trying to put a lid on concerns raised about two taxpayer-funded nannies who provide care for Justin Trudeau’s three young children.

Dogged with questions about the caregiver controversy, Kate Purchase, Trudeau’s director of communications, released a statement yesterday indicating the prime minister will adjust his staff complement to suit his family’s needs.
