Woodland snares title in playoff

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Gary Woodland was surprised to see infant son, Jaxson, with wife, Gabby, late yesterday afternoon at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“My wife kind of surprised me with him," he remarked. ”I didn't think he was going to be there. I thought it would just be her.

“For her to bring him out, that was special and something I'll never forget.”

Mickelson, Rahm paired up to start

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm got the party started early today in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The former Arizona State stars will begin play with Xander Schauffele on the 10th tee at TPC Scottsdale just before 8 a.m. (local time).

They will hit the rowdy par-three 16th hours before the alcohol-fuelled revelry kicks into high gear at the stadium hole.

Rahm takes home title in playoff

LA QUINTA, Calif.—Jon Rahm headed over the hill to San Diego for his Torrey Pines title defence with a playoff victory in the CareerBuilder Challenge and the No. 2 spot in the world ranking.

The Spaniard is way ahead of where he even dreamed he would be this early in his career.

“To think of being No. 2 in the world, it's hard to believe,” Rahm admitted.
