Playing keep-away

Kevin Friesen of Emo kept the ball away from Dominos’ Michael Sande during a Borderland men’s soccer game at the St. Francis Sportsfields yesterday evening. Friesen netted Emo’s lone goal but the squad was unable to overcome their disadvantage of having no substitutes as Dominos took the game 3-1.

Picnicking ‘bears’

Five-year-olds Kathryn Fisher and Macy Holden, complete with painted faces, enjoyed their lunch during the Fort Frances Public Library’s annual “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” on Tuesday at the Fort Frances High School cafeteria. Children’s librarian Andrea Avis said 400-500 youngsters turned out for the picnic this year.

Art class

Jennifer Coats worked on a watercolour painting of dying tulips at a workshop taught by former local artist Linda Lovisa at the Fine Line Art Gallery here last Wednesday. Lovisa, in town for a visit, still is a member of the gallery and also taught a class in acrylic painting over the weekend.

Plumridge souvenirs

Well-known local artist Vi Plumridge has decided to take advantage of Fort Frances’ market for souvenirs by starting up her own business, matching her paintings of historical buildings around town with mugs, notebooks, fridge magnets, and other souvenir-type objects.
