Duane Hicks

Duane Hicks has been a staff writer/photographer for the Fort Frances Times since 1998. Raised in Fort Frances, he left town in 1993 to attend the Journalism program at Carleton University in Ottawa. He returned in the spring of 1998, being hired at the Times shortly thereafter. He covers a variety of news beats, including municipal politics which he has covered since 2001. He also makes a mean salsa which he shares with the rest of the Times staff on his birthday.

Bring in those pennies

Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, weighed some pennies turned in during the annual “Penny for Your Thoughts” weigh-in last January at Canadian Tire. The fundraiser will run there again tomorrow (Jan. 23) from 2-9 p.m. and again Saturday, Jan. 24 from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Celebrating 20 years

RRFDC chair Russ Fortier, left, received a trio of plaques from Northern Development and Mines minister Michael Gravelle on behalf of three area businesses—the Fisheries Resort, Ross’ Camp, and the Emo Inn—that initially were helped out by the NOHFC 20 years ago.

Break from the cold

Thomas LePine, left, and Avery Adrian made good use of the milder weather yesterday afternoon to brush up on their hockey skills at the East End rink. Other youths also were out skating there. Temperatures are expected to remain warmer for most of the week, only to plunge again Friday.
