The 47th-annual Manitou Fish Fry, hosted by the Rainy River First Nations' chief and council, will be held today (May 19) starting at 4 p.m. at the RRFN pow-wow grounds (just north of the Highway 11/71 junction). Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Volunteers are greatly appreciated and donations welcomed!

Town council will hold its next regular meeting Tuesday, May 23 at the Civic Centre. It will follow the committee of the whole meeting, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

The Mill Alumni (formerly the Oldtimers" Club) will hold its fifth-annual banquet Thursday, May 25 at the local Legion, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which cost $30 each and must be purchased by May 16, are available at the Sister Kennedy Centre and From the Grind Up. The Legion Ladies' Auxiliary will hold a special monthly supper featuring Chicken Oscar, in celebration of its 90th year, on Friday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m. upstairs at the Legion (doors open at 4:30). Admission is $15/person, with take-outs available by calling 274-3772. A 50/50 draw also will be held.

The Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association is accepting applications for coaches, convenors, and referees-in-chief, with the deadline being Friday, May 26. Applicants for all positions are asked to apply at Fort Frances Minor Hockey, Box 306, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M7.

The Fort Frances Fire & Rescue Service will hold a spring open house on Saturday, May 27 from 8 a.m.-noon at the Fort Frances Fire Hall. There will be fire safety and emergency preparedness hand-outs, giveaways for kids, and draws for fire safety T-shirts.

The “Friends of the Library” will hold a book sale Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations welcome (drop books off at the library the week prior to the sale), with proceeds to benefit the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre.

The Fort Frances Lakers will hold their annual general meeting Monday, May 29 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Super 8 Motel. The Lakers are welcoming new board members and volunteers, and residents and fans alike are urged to attend.

The United Native Friendship Centre will hold its annual general meeting and election of officers on Wednesday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Circle of Life Centre (616 Mowat Ave.) Memberships cost $5/person or $10 for families.

The “Walk for Alzheimer's” is slated for Saturday, June 10 along the La Verendrye Parkway here. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Sorting Gap Marina, with a warm-up to follow at 10:30 a.m. The walks will begin at 11 a.m., with a barbecue to follow. To register and start fundraising, visit

The annual general meeting of the Rainy River District Women's Shelter of Hope is set for Tuesday, June 13 at 5 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous.
